Music and Liturgical Arts
Vanderbilt Church follows the call of the psalmist to make a joyful noise to the Lord through the pipe organ, grand pianos and the beautiful voices of our children and soloists. In addition to our own music and worship events, we offer a marvelous concert series that attracts hundreds of listeners to the church.
Vanderbilt follows the call of the psalmist to make a joyful noise to the Lord through many different musical mediums, including the Chancel Choir, Carillon Ringers, Handbell Choir, the Livley Fulcher Organ, a Yamaha Clavinova, four grand pianos and the beautiful voices of our children and soloists. We provide musical enrichment for all our worship opportunities. A dynamic concert series brings together singers, instrumentalists, writers and artists and choirs to lift the spirit and inspire.
Dear Friends of Music,
I am excited to share the 2021/2022 Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church Concert Series with you! We have talented artists from our own neighborhood, and talented artists from around the globe! We have instrumental soloists, organ recitals, choir concerts and many super-talented vocal soloists. There is something for everyone.
Please browse through this brochure, and mark your calendars accordingly! In order to present talent on this level, we need your financial support. Please consider giving generously, as you are comfortable. If you are unable to give, please come to the concerts anyway! This free concert series was started in 1991 as an outreach to our community in an effort to introduce them to our church family and beautiful facility. I am thrilled by the number of people we are reaching in the area, but would love to see more of our own members at the concerts.
Attend the concerts! Invite your friends to lunch and a concert. (NOTE: we are presenting our concerts at TWO P.M. this year so you can attend church, enjoy lunch at a neighborhood restaurant, and then attend a concert!)
Please take a look at what we are offering this year, and contribute as generously as you can. And then, tell your friends about the series, and attend these remarkable world-class concerts!
Dr. James B. Cochran,
Director of Music
The 85-voice Chancel Choir of Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church provides music for all services of worship. Drawing from a repertoire of all periods of music history from plain chant to contemporary Christian music, the choir serves as the musical ministers of the congregation. The Chancel Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble and membership is open to all interested singers. In addition to providing music for worship, the choir presents two concerts annually.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday night September through May in Cochran Music Hall. Warm-up rehearsals are held one-half hour before each worship service. If you are interested in joining the choir, please call Jim Cochran at 597-5410.
Vanderbilt Readers Theater Company
Readers Theater is the performance of literature (poetry, prose, scripture, and drama) without memorization, costumes, sets, or props. It involves using the body and the spoken voice, individually and together, to illuminate the written text in the imagination of the audience. Readers create a variety of characters, narrators, and sound effects. Rehearsals involve theater games to improve skills in working and reading together. If you’re a would-be actor and a person of imagination with a good sense of fun, then this is the group for you.
Carillon Ringers Handbell Choir
The Carillon Ringers Handbell Choir, an ensemble utilizing 5 1/2 octaves of Schulmerich handbells conducted by Stanley Leonard, provides inspiring music during regular worship services from October through April and for Christmas and Spring Concerts presented at the church. If you’re interested in membership, contact Stanley Leonard at the church office (239)597-5410.
The Concert Series is a part of the church’s outreach program to the community.
It will delight, amaze and inspire you, regardless of your musical preferences! We bring together outstanding singers and instrumentalists to lift your spirit and immerse you in the beauty of the world that surrounds us. You’ll find passionate prayers, delightful displays of whimsy and contemplative music and song.
Seating for all concerts is first-come, first-served. Doors open 45 minutes before performance time.
Come and enjoy the renovated Sanctuary with the addition of our new gorgeous Lively-Fulcher Organ. This year, Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church is also the new Gulf Coast home of Seraphic Fire, Florida’s Grammy Nominated Vocal Ensemble. Tickets for all their performances are required.
